Room Dividers for Gyms and Churches: Divider Walls, Partition Walls and Folding Walls Compared

Gym curtain, accordion wall or folding panel wall? How to choose a room divider for a gym, sanctuary, fellowship hall or classroom, and what each one does for sound.

People call them a lot of things: room dividers, divider walls, partition walls, folding walls, accordion walls, folding doors, movable walls. In the trade they are operable walls or operable partitions. Whatever the name, the goal is the same: turn one big room into two or more and open it back up when you need the space.

Gyms and churches ask more of a divider than most rooms. A gym wall may be 20 feet tall and get bumped by balls. A church may need the sanctuary and the children's classroom next door to both be usable at 10 a.m. on Sunday. This guide compares the main options, from curtains to acoustic walls, and explains how sound ratings (STC) work so you can choose what your room actually needs.

The six kinds of room dividers

Sound control

Gym divider curtain
Blocks view; little sound control
Portable panel divider
Absorbs some sound inside each space; not a wall
Accordion partition (folding door)
Sight division up to moderate sound control; Modernfold SoundMaster up to STC 40
Operable panel wall
High: Modernfold Acousti-Seal Premier up to STC 50, Legacy up to STC 52, Encore up to STC 56
Glass operable wall
Modernfold Acousti-Clear STC 45 or 51

How it operates

Gym divider curtain
Rolls or folds up to the ceiling, often motorized
Portable panel divider
Rolls on casters and folds
Accordion partition (folding door)
Pulls along a ceiling track and stacks compactly; electric available
Operable panel wall
Panels move out of a stack on a ceiling track; manual or electric
Glass operable wall
Glass panels on a ceiling track

Best for

Gym divider curtain
PE classes where noise between halves is acceptable
Portable panel divider
Temporary breakout areas, events
Accordion partition (folding door)
Church classrooms, fellowship halls, smaller openings
Operable panel wall
Gyms, sanctuaries, multipurpose rooms, classrooms
Glass operable wall
Lobbies, youth rooms and spaces that need daylight and sight lines
Room divider options compared STC values are manufacturer lab ratings for the partition itself. Field results also depend on the ceiling, plenum and walls around it.

How much sound control do you need?

Sound Transmission Class (STC) is a single number for how well a partition blocks airborne sound; higher is better. A curtain only blocks the view. An accordion around STC 40 keeps normal speech from being easily understood. Acoustic panel walls in the 50s let two groups use a gym or hall at the same time. See what STC ratings mean for operable partitions for more detail.

  • Gym PE classes on both sides: an acoustic panel wall, often STC 48 to 55 for educational and gym dividers.
  • Sanctuary next to a fellowship hall or classroom with worship music: a high-STC panel wall, and attention to the ceiling above it.
  • Sunday school classrooms off a hallway or hall: SoundMaster accordion or a Premier panel wall.
  • Overflow or storage closures where only sight division matters: a standard accordion partition.

The ceiling matters

Sound goes over the top. If the space above the partition is open to the next room, even a high-STC wall will underperform. Plan a sound barrier above the track (a plenum barrier) with the architect or contractor.

Room dividers for gyms

A gym divider has to span a wide, tall opening, stand up to daily use and be easy for staff to run. Common choices:

  • Electric operable panel walls: staff turn keyed switches and the panels travel out, close and seal on their own. Modernfold electric walls use two keyed switches activated together, so only authorized staff can run them.
  • Gym curtains: lowest cost when sound control isn't needed.

Example: at three Lakeshore Community Schools elementary gyms, LG2 replaced old manual walls with Modernfold Acousti-Seal Premier Electric walls, each 60'-0" wide and 17'-11" high, rated STC 50. See the Lakeshore project.

Room dividers for churches

  • Sanctuary overflow: a panel wall that opens the sanctuary into the fellowship hall for holidays and closes it the rest of the year.
  • Fellowship halls: panel walls or SoundMaster accordions that split the hall for classes, meals and meetings.
  • Children's and adult classrooms: SoundMaster accordion partitions, rated up to STC 40 with steel sound liners, are made for church classrooms and fellowship halls.
  • Gathering spaces and youth rooms: glass operable walls keep daylight and sight lines.

Choosing: questions to answer first

  • How wide and how tall is the opening?
  • Do both sides need to be used at the same time, and how loud is each activity?
  • Is there structure above to hang the track? If not, a self-supporting truss system may work.
  • Where can the panels stack when the wall is open?
  • Who runs it, and how often? Manual or electric?
  • Do you need a pass door?
  • Finish: vinyl, fabric, laminate, wood or glass?

Repairing or replacing an old folding wall

Old walls that drag, won't seal, have broken hinges or worn sweeps, or take several people to move can often be repaired. When parts are no longer available or the wall is unsafe, a replacement wall can usually use the existing opening. LG2 services and repairs operable walls, accordions and glass walls, and replaces walls originally specified as Hufcor with Modernfold equivalents. See service and repair and Hufcor replacement.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What's the best room divider for a gym?
If both halves need to be used at once, an acoustic operable panel wall. Electric operation lets staff run a tall gym wall with a key switch. A gym curtain costs less but only blocks the view.
What's the best room divider for a church?
It depends on the room. Panel walls suit sanctuaries and fellowship halls that need real sound control; SoundMaster accordion partitions (up to STC 40) suit classrooms and fellowship halls; glass walls suit gathering spaces.
Is an accordion wall the same as a folding door?
Generally, yes. Accordion partitions, also called accordion doors or folding doors, hang from a ceiling track and fold into a compact stack. They range from sight-only dividers to acoustic models like Modernfold SoundMaster.
Are room dividers soundproof?
No movable wall is fully soundproof. Acoustic panel walls rated in the 50s give strong sound separation, provided the ceiling and plenum above are treated too.
Can an old folding partition be repaired?
Often, yes. LG2 repairs operable walls, accordions and glass walls, and replaces walls when repair no longer makes sense.
