Plastic laminate (PLAM) and HPL lockers

Laminate lockers, also called plastic laminate or PLAM lockers, bond a decorative high pressure laminate (HPL) face to an engineered wood core. The result reads like custom casework: full-width doors, edge banding that matches the face, and woodgrains that pass for real wood, with a broad range of colors and textures to match a brand or an interior.

LG2 supplies laminate lockers from GearGrid (GridIron team lockers with laminate doors), The Athletic Edge (wood and laminate athletic lockers) and Hollman (laminate and NanoLam lockers for fitness studios, clubs and spas, workplaces, healthcare staff rooms and team rooms). In Michigan, we most often install laminate lockers in dressing areas, offices and team rooms; for showers and pool decks we'll point you to solid phenolic or HDPE plastic.

Applications

Where laminate lockers fit

Laminate lockers are a finish-grade choice for rooms where the lockers are part of the interior: they look like millwork, take almost any color or woodgrain, and stand up to daily use. Here's where we install laminate lockers in Michigan and Indiana, and where we recommend a different material.

  • Fitness centers and health clubs

Member locker rooms want a hospitality look that survives constant traffic. Woodgrain or solid HPL doors, matched edge banding and keyless or digital locks keep a bank looking clean and easy to run.

  • Country clubs and golf clubs

Full-length hanging lockers with hat and shoe shelves suit clubhouse locker rooms, and woodgrain laminate gives a member room a warm, furniture look. Laminate can be paired with wood veneer or phenolic lockers in the same clubhouse.

  • Workplaces and corporate locker rooms

Day-use and employee lockers for hybrid offices, corporate fitness rooms and break areas. Compact valuables lockers and networked smart locks fit shared and unassigned seating.

  • Healthcare staff rooms

Durable, wipe-clean laminate lockers organize staff changing and break rooms. Staff-room models and super-matte, fingerprint-resistant finishes are available.

  • Schools, civic and public safety

Staff rooms, libraries, police stations and fire departments use laminate lockers for dependable, good-looking storage. Athletic team rooms can go laminate too, with team lockers from GearGrid, The Athletic Edge and Hollman.

  • Where we recommend something else

Laminate has an engineered wood core, so it isn't for showers, pool decks or rooms that get hosed down. For wet areas we recommend solid phenolic or HDPE plastic lockers, and for fire and EMS turnout gear, open, ventilated gear lockers.

Compare

Laminate vs. phenolic and wood lockers

PLAM and HPL describe the same thing on a locker: a thin, hard sheet of high pressure laminate bonded to a particleboard or MDF core. Solid phenolic is made from resin-impregnated layers pressed into a solid panel all the way through, so there is no wood core to protect. Wood lockers use real wood with a clear finish. Here's how the three compare.

Planning & installation

How a laminate locker project works

A laminate locker room is closer to casework than to a row of steel lockers, so the details are settled up front. Here's how we take a laminate locker project in Michigan or Indiana from first measurements to a finished room.

  1. Step 1

Measure the room and count users

We measure the walls, check floor and wall conditions, and work out how many users need hanging space and how many only need a place for a bag or phone.

  2. Step 2

    Choose the model and tiers

Full-length hanging lockers for clubs and team rooms; double, multi-tier or Z-style where count matters; compact valuables lockers for day use.

  3. Step 3

    Pick finishes and locks

Choose the door laminate, interior color, number tags and lock type. In-stock finishes keep lead times shorter; custom colors and smart locks add time, and we confirm it before you order.

  4. Step 4

    Plan accessible lockers

The 2010 ADA Standards require at least 5 percent of each type of locker, and no fewer than one, to be accessible. Laminate locker lines include ADA-accessible models, and we plan accessible positions with your design team during submittals.

  5. Step 5

    Submittals and site prep

We prepare submittals with the manufacturer's spec sheets and drawings, and coordinate bases, trim, valances and any blocking in the wall with your contractor before the lockers ship.

  6. Step 6

    Delivery and installation

Our crew sets and levels the lockers following the manufacturer's instructions, adds bases, fillers and trim, then adjusts doors, hinges and locks before the walkthrough.

Care & maintenance

Caring for laminate lockers

Laminate is easy to keep clean. This combines typical manufacturer care guidance for laminate lockers with our practical advice; always check the care sheet for your line.

  • Clean routinely with a damp cloth, with or without a little mild soap, or a cleaner the manufacturer approves.
  • Never use steel wool, abrasive pads or powders, acids, lye or melamine sponges on standard laminate.
  • Wipe up standing water and don't leave wet towels or gear against the doors or edges.
  • Leave the gap around each door open so air can move through the locker.
  • Check hinges, latches and locks from time to time and adjust doors as needed. Call us for replacement parts or added lockers.

FAQ

Laminate lockers FAQ

What are laminate lockers?
Laminate lockers, also called plastic laminate or PLAM lockers, have doors and cabinets faced with high pressure laminate (HPL) over an engineered wood core such as particleboard or MDF. They come in solid colors, textures and woodgrains, with edge banding that matches the face, and look like custom casework.
Are plastic laminate, PLAM and HPL lockers the same thing?
Yes, in practice. PLAM is shorthand for plastic laminate, and HPL (high pressure laminate) is the type of plastic laminate used on locker faces. All three terms describe a locker with a laminate surface over an engineered wood core.
What is the difference between laminate and phenolic lockers?
Laminate lockers have a thin HPL face over a wood-based core, so they suit dry and damp rooms. Solid phenolic is pressed into a solid, non-porous panel all the way through, so it is waterproof and suits showers, pools and wet locker rooms. Both come in woodgrains, and many projects use laminate in the dressing area and phenolic near the wet zones.
Can laminate lockers go in a locker room with showers?
In the dressing area, yes. Laminate handles everyday locker-room humidity, and gaps or vents around the doors let air move through. Inside shower rooms, on pool decks or anywhere the lockers get wet, we recommend solid phenolic or HDPE plastic lockers.
What finishes and wood-look options are available?
Laminate lockers come in HPL solids, textures, bold colors and realistic woodgrains with matching edge banding, and some lines add super-matte, fingerprint-resistant finishes. Popular finishes are often stocked for shorter lead times, and custom colors are available. GearGrid, The Athletic Edge and Hollman each have their own finish options, and we'll walk you through them.
Which laminate lockers does LG2 supply?
GearGrid GridIron team lockers with solid MDF laminate doors, The Athletic Edge wood and laminate athletic lockers, and Hollman laminate and NanoLam lockers from its fitness, workspace, club and resort, spa, medical and athletic collections.
