- What is an accordion partition?
- An accordion partition, also called an accordion folding door, is a compact type of operable partition: a top-supported partition that folds into a compact stack like an accordion. It hangs from an overhead track, pulls across the opening to divide a room and latches, then folds back to open it. Modernfold offers two lines: Modernfold 800 / 1200 for sight division and SoundMaster 8 / 12 for moderate sound attenuation.
- What's the difference between Modernfold 800 / 1200 and SoundMaster 8 / 12?
- Both use an all-steel frame and hinges, ball-bearing trolleys and replaceable coverings. SoundMaster adds steel-paneled sound liners and three-ply top and bottom sweeps, which give it an STC of 39 (SM8) or 40 (SM12). Modernfold 800 / 1200 has no acoustical rating and is meant for sight and space separation, and it is lighter to hang.
- What's the difference between the 8 / 800 and the 12 / 1200 models?
- The 8 and 800 models stack 9" wide with a 2-1/8" stack depth per lineal foot of opening and reach 50'-0" wide. The 12 and 1200 models stack 12-5/8" wide with a 1-3/4" stack depth per foot and reach 60'-0" wide. All four go up to 16'-0" high, and a paired partition doubles the maximum width.
- How much sound does an accordion partition block?
- SoundMaster 8 is rated STC 39 and SoundMaster 12 STC 40, tested in an independent lab to ASTM E90 and classified to ASTM E413. Modernfold 800 / 1200 is not acoustically rated. If a room needs more sound control, a solid-panel operable wall is the better choice.
- Can an accordion partition be electrically operated?
- Yes. All four models are available with electric operation on a #7 track with chain guide, a roller chain drive and a key-operated control with an overload safety device. Electric operation is required for SoundMaster 8 openings over 400 sq ft, SoundMaster 12 over 360 sq ft and Modernfold 1200 over 730 sq ft. The electrical contractor provides power and wiring.
- Can accordion partitions curve or turn corners?
- Yes. Curved track lets the partition move around corners, and Modernfold 800 / 1200 can also run curved or serpentine. Track switches and meeting posts, including free rolling "T" and "X" posts, allow intersecting layouts.
- What finishes are available?
- Reinforced heavy-duty vinyl with woven backing, acoustical needle punch carpet, stain-resistant wall covering and upholstery fabric, or customer's own material with factory approval. Coverings are Class A rated and easily replaceable.
- Can LG2 replace an older Panelfold accordion door or partition?
- Yes. If your building has an older accordion door or partition from another manufacturer, such as Panelfold, LG2 surveys the opening, the existing track and the stack area, then recommends a Modernfold 800 / 1200 or SoundMaster 8 / 12 replacement sized to the opening and the sound control the room needs.
- What warranty comes with Modernfold accordion partitions?
- Modernfold provides a two-year written warranty to repair or replace components with manufacturing defects. LG2 installs to Modernfold's instructions and supports the owner with adjustment and service.
