Choosing School Lockers: Metal, Plastic, Phenolic and Wood

Start with the room, then pick the material, tiers, doors and locks. How metal, HDPE plastic, phenolic and wood lockers compare for corridors, locker rooms and pools.

From elementary cubbies to varsity team rooms, the right locker depends on who uses it, what goes inside and how wet the room gets. A locker schedule comes down to four things: the room, the material, the opening size and the hardware. This guide covers the decisions that most often change a submittal, based on what the manufacturers LG2 supplies throughout Michigan and Indiana publish.

Start with the room

Is it a dry corridor, a wet locker room, a pool deck or a team room? Moisture drives the choice between steel, HDPE plastic and phenolic more than anything else. Metal school lockers suit corridors, plastic and phenolic lockers handle wet locker rooms and pools, athletic lockers are built around team gear, and wood lockers bring a furniture look to clubs and team rooms.

Metal lockers: all-welded or knockdown

Steel is the standard for school corridors. The main choice is how the locker is built:

  • All-welded lockers, such as List Industries Classmate, Graduate and Marquis Protector or Lyon's all-welded line, are welded into one frame at the factory.
  • Knockdown (KD) lockers are bolted together, with heavier-gauge options such as List Industries HDC and HDV.
  • Warranties depend on the maker and construction. For example, List Industries offers a lifetime warranty on all-welded lockers and 2 years on KD, and ASI metal lockers carry 2 years.

Metal lines run from single to six tier, with ventilated, see-through Safety-View, smart LokrIQ and first responder models, plus all-welded cubbies for early childhood and elementary rooms. For gym lockers, ventilated steel with diamond perforated doors lets clothes air out between classes. See our metal lockers page for the List Industries, ASI Storage Solutions and Lyon ranges.

HDPE plastic lockers for wet rooms

Solid, color-through HDPE plastic lockers are made for pools, showers and high-humidity rooms where steel would rust. LG2 supplies HDPE lockers from List Industries (Aquamax), Columbia Lockers (PSISC) (PolyLife), Summit Lockers and ASI Storage Solutions, most in 1 to 6-tier and Z-tier configurations. Compare them on our plastic lockers page.

Phenolic lockers: the look of wood in a wet room

Solid phenolic lockers are non-porous and waterproof, so they resist mold, mildew and bacteria in wet locker rooms. They also resist graffiti and scratches, and they come in solid colors, speckles and woodgrains. LG2 supplies solid phenolic lockers from List Industries (VersaMax), Columbia Lockers (PSISC) (Solid Phenolic and TerraCore), Summit Lockers and ASI Storage Solutions for schools, rec centers, aquatic facilities, stadiums and healthcare. More on our phenolic lockers page.

Wood and athletic lockers

Wood lockers bring a furniture look. Club Lockers are 3/4" red oak plywood with lacquered, furniture-grade doors for clubs, spas and fitness centers, and Recruiter Wood Sport Lockers are custom wood athletic lockers in red oak, mahogany, white oak, cherry, maple or walnut, up to 36" wide and 96" high. See wood lockers.

Team lockers are built around gear: seats and footlockers, upper security boxes, coat rods, shoulder pad and helmet racks, LED lighting, USB outlets and digital locks. GearGrid, List Industries, The Athletic Edge, ASI Storage Solutions and Lyon all offer team locker lines, and GearGrid's open wire design maximizes air movement so gear dries faster. See athletic lockers.

Tiers, sizes, doors and locks

  • Set the tier count and the width, depth and height of each opening, then the number of users per locker.
  • Pick the door style (louvered, plain, perforated or see-through) and the latch: single-point or multi-point.
  • Name the lock type and who manages access: padlock hasp, built-in combination, key, keypad or RFID. LokrIQ smart lockers add badge, mobile/QR and PIN access with cloud management.
  • Plan ADA positions into the layout. Columbia offers ADA-compliant offset and aluminum uni-hinge options, and LG2 confirms ADA locations during submittals.
  • Include bases, slope tops and benches in the scope.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What lockers work best in a pool or shower area?
Solid HDPE plastic or solid phenolic. Both resist moisture where steel would rust. List Industries, Columbia Lockers (PSISC), Summit Lockers and ASI Storage Solutions all make HDPE and phenolic lockers for those rooms.
What is the difference between all-welded and knockdown lockers?
All-welded lockers are welded into one frame at the factory; knockdown lockers are bolted together. Warranties depend on the maker and construction, and LG2 confirms them for each line during submittals.
Does LG2 install lockers?
Yes. LG2 coordinates submittals, delivery and installation, including bases, slope tops, benches and ADA positions, and helps with parts and additions later.
